Fear of Heights on Madeira Trails

Practical advice for hikers who feel uneasy on exposed mountain paths. Discover the safest PR routes, understand what 'exposed' really means in Madeira, and find alternatives that keep you comfortable.

Before you choose a trail

  • Some 'easy' trails include sections with steep drops or narrow ledges
  • Wind gusts in mountain areas can feel stronger than expected
  • Railings are present on the most dangerous sections but not everywhere
  • Tunnels on PR8 and PR11 provide breaks from exposure but require a headlamp
  • Alternative levada walks offer similar scenery with minimal exposure

These trails keep you away from steep drops most of the time. Perfect for building confidence or hiking with nervous companions.
