Trail Overview

Vereda do Areeiro (Areeiro → Ruivo) (PR1) is a hard vereda (mountain ridge) trail located in Madeira, Portugal. Starting from Pico do Areeiro and ending at Pico Ruivo, this 15.6km route typically takes 7-8 hours to complete.Madeira's most iconic ridge walk across the island's highest peaks. Exposed drops and vertigo triggers; extremely weather-dependent. Capacity limits apply after reopening.

Why PR1 is Madeira's defining hike

PR1 is the trail that put Madeira on the hiking map. The traverse between Pico do Areeiro (1,818m) and Pico Ruivo (1,862m) — the island's two highest peaks — crosses a dramatic ridgeline above the clouds with drops of 500m+ on both sides. There is nothing else like it in the Macaronesian archipelago.

The trail has always been demanding, but the August 2024 wildfire and subsequent 20-month reconstruction have changed it. The landscape is rawer now — stripped laurel forest, exposed volcanic rock, regenerating scrub where there were once ancient trees. It's still spectacular, but it's a different kind of spectacular. If you've hiked PR1 before, expect a trail you recognise but a landscape you don't.

The reopening: what changed after the wildfire

The wildfire of August 2024 swept through Madeira's central mountain range, destroying sections of PR1's infrastructure — wooden walkways, handrails, safety cables, signage — and severely damaging the laurel forest ecosystem along the route. IFCN closed the trail immediately.

The reconstruction took 20 months and is one of the most significant trail infrastructure projects in Madeira's history. Key changes include:

Rebuilt infrastructure

Damaged wooden sections replaced with more durable, fire-resistant materials. New handrails, cables, and barriers along the most exposed ridgeline sections.

Capacity management

Limited daily entries with mandatory 30-minute time slots via SIMplifica. No more showing up at dawn to race the crowds.

Higher fee tier

PR1 costs EUR 10.50 (EUR 7 with protocol operator) — more than double the standard EUR 4.50 trail fee. It is excluded from multi-day passes.

Changed landscape

Natural recovery is underway but full regrowth will take years. Expect more exposed terrain than pre-fire photos suggest.

How to book PR1 in 2026

PR1 has its own booking process, separate from other Madeira trails. Here's the exact process:

  1. 1
Go to SIMplifica — Visit simplifica.madeira.gov.pt and create an account or log in.
  2. 2
Select PR1 (Vereda do Areeiro) — Choose your date and a 30-minute entry slot. Morning slots sell out first — 7:00-8:30 are the most popular.
  3. 3
Pay EUR 10.50 per person — PR1 is excluded from multi-day passes. Each person pays individually. With an IFCN protocol operator, the fee drops to EUR 7.
  4. 4
Save your digital ticket — Download or screenshot your permit. Rangers check tickets at the trailhead. No ticket, no entry.

Pro tip: The first weeks after the April 27 reopening will have very high demand. Book as far in advance as SIMplifica allows. Weekday early morning slots are the easiest to secure.

The route: what to expect section by section

PR1 is a point-to-point traverse. Most hikers start at Pico do Areeiro and finish at Achada do Teixeira (or the reverse). The full trail is technically one-way, but the route includes several distinct sections with different character:

Section 1: Pico do Areeiro to Pico do Gato (2.5 km)

The trail drops steeply from Areeiro through a series of carved steps and tunnels. This section has the most dramatic initial views. Expect wind — the ridge is fully exposed. Path width varies from 1.5m to less than 1m in places.

Section 2: Pico do Gato to Pico Ruivo shelter (3 km)

The crux of the trail. This ridgeline section has the highest exposure with drops of 500m+ on both sides and sections where the path narrows to 60-70cm. Safety cables have been reinstalled post-reconstruction, but the exposure is genuine. If you have any vertigo, this section will test you. There is no safe point to turn back mid-section.

Section 3: Pico Ruivo shelter to summit (0.5 km)

Short, steep ascent to Madeira's highest point (1,862m). The shelter has basic facilities (toilets, water). The summit views on a clear day extend to Porto Santo, 50km to the northeast.

Section 4: Pico Ruivo to Achada do Teixeira (2.5 km)

The descent to Achada do Teixeira is the least exposed section. Stone steps and a well-maintained path through recovering vegetation. This section is shared with PR1.2 hikers coming up from Achada.

Weather and when to go

At 1,800m+, PR1 has its own weather system. Fog, cloud, wind, and cold are possible any month. The golden rule: check the forecast specifically for Pico do Areeiro (not Funchal, which is at sea level and can be 15°C warmer).

Best months

May-June and September-October. Stable weather, lower humidity, clearer views. Sunrise hikes in October are unforgettable — you're above the cloud inversion layer.

Risky months

November-February. Higher rainfall, frequent fog at altitude, strong winds. The trail may close temporarily for weather. Summer (July-August) is warm but very crowded and afternoon clouds are common.

Sunrise hikes: Starting at first light gives you the best chance of clear views and fewer people. Check sunset/sunrise times for your date — in summer, first light is around 6:00.

Transport and logistics

PR1 is point-to-point, so you need to solve the transport problem. You start at one end and finish at the other, 15km of mountain ridge later.

Option 1: Guided tour (simplest)

A guide handles pickup from Funchal, drop-off at the start, and collection at the end. They also handle SIMplifica booking. This is the most hassle-free option, especially if you don't have a rental car.

Option 2: Two cars

Leave one car at Achada do Teixeira, drive the other to Pico do Areeiro. Hike the traverse, then drive the second car back to collect the first. Requires two drivers in the group.

Option 3: Taxi/transfer

Drive to Pico do Areeiro. Arrange a taxi from Achada do Teixeira back to Areeiro (or Santana/Funchal). Agree the price before you hike — mountain taxis are limited and expensive.

Option 4: Out-and-back from Achada

Park at Achada do Teixeira, hike to Pico Ruivo summit and return. This is the PR1.2 route — shorter (5.6km return), less exposed, and no transport logistics. You miss the dramatic ridge but still reach the highest peak.

Honest assessment: is PR1 right for you?

PR1 is not a trail to attempt casually. The exposure is real — there are sections where a fall would be fatal, and safety cables are your only protection. Wind, fog, and rain make the ridgeline significantly more dangerous.

Skip PR1 if: you have significant fear of heights, you're not confident in your fitness for 7-8 hours of mountain terrain, or the weather forecast shows fog or strong wind at altitude.

Do PR1 if: you're comfortable with exposed ridgelines, you have proper boots and layers, you've booked an early morning slot, and the forecast is clear above 1,500m.

Consider instead: PR1.2 (Achada do Teixeira) reaches Pico Ruivo summit with a fraction of the exposure. Same views from the top, much less vertigo on the way.

MIUT connection

The Madeira Island Ultra Trail (MIUT) — one of Europe's premier ultra-running events — used PR1 as the symbolic reopening moment on April 25-26, 2026. Trail runners crossed the reconstructed ridgeline before public access began on April 27. If you're interested in Madeira's trail running scene, see our MIUT 2026 coverage.
