Best season
Year-round - mornings beat the cloud
Spring through autumn for stable clear conditions. In winter, arrive before 10:00 - the cloud cap parks over the central peaks by mid-morning on most days. Sunrise is dramatic if you time it right (07:00 in summer, 08:00 in winter).
“Forty-five minutes round trip from the car for a view that takes some people six hours of hiking.”
02 · Getting to the trailhead
How to reach the start
Map placeholder
Start: Ribeiro Frio · End: Balcões viewpoint
By car from Funchal
About 25 minutes via VR1 east then ER103 inland to Ribeiro Frio. Mountain road, paved, no narrow last-kilometre drama.
Parking
Free roadside parking along the ER103 in Ribeiro Frio. Trout-farm restaurant doubles as parking marker. Fills 10:00-12:00 on summer weekends.
Public transport
SAM bus 103 from Funchal serves Ribeiro Frio. Trail entrance is two minutes walk from the bus stop.
Operator pickup
Half-day tours often combine Balcões with Ribeiro Frio trout farm and a Santana stop. Easy add-on; no fee complication.
Taxi or transfer
Funchal to Ribeiro Frio one-way is €30-35. Driver will usually wait 1 hour for €15-20.
Tip from Filipe
Ribeiro Frio has a famous trout restaurant at the trailhead - rainbow trout fresh from the on-site farm. Hike PR11 first, lunch after. The path is busy with families through midday so the early start also avoids photo-stop bottlenecks.
Driving yourself
Madeira rental from Funchal Airport, around €25-40/day in May
We use DiscoverCars to compare local agencies. Trailhead access on most PR routes is easier with a car.

Back the same path
Same route in reverse. The very gentle climb back to the trailhead is easy for any fitness level.
04 · Gear and safety
What to bring and when to bail
Required
- Walking shoes (sneakers fine)
- Camera or phone
- Light layer
- Water (small bottle)
Recommended
- Sunglasses (alpine glare at the balcony)
- Snacks for the view
- Cash for trout lunch after
Family-friendly with caveats
Very easy by Madeira standards. The viewing platform is properly fenced. The cobbled path can be slick after rain - kids should hold a hand on wet days.
View depends on cloud
When the peaks are in cloud, you get a misty forest walk with white wall at the end. Still pleasant, not the postcard. Check Areeiro forecast before driving up.
Signal mostly fine
Strong cellular on the road and at the viewpoint. Brief drop in the deepest forest dip.
The viewing balcony gets crowded
In summer, 50-80 visitors per hour at peak times. Photographers tripod-up; tour groups stop in the middle. Patience, not safety - but plan for delays.
Emergency: 112
Coverage along this route is patchy. Walk-out point: back to Ribeiro Frio trailhead (km 0). The trout farm restaurant is the closest staffed building.

Starts at the same Ribeiro Frio trailhead. A serious 10 km levada walk to Portela. Currently closed - check status before planning.
