  • SIMplifica permit

Recommended

  • Trekking pole for the steep middle section

River crossings are the safety story

Stepping stones get slick. Cross one stone at a time. Avoid right after heavy rain when stones are submerged.

Wet valley microclimate

The river valley is consistently damp. Light rain jacket regardless of forecast.

Signal patchy in the valley

Coverage drops between the steep walls. Available at the village and the top viewpoint.

Emergency: 112

Coverage along this route is patchy. Walk-out point: back to the village (km 0). The viewpoint at km 2.7 has no road access.

06 · After the hike

What to do with the rest of the day

Pair it with

  • PR15 Vereda da Ribeira da Janela (Curral Falso descent)

Same valley, opposite direction. Different start, different difficulty profile.

  • Porto Moniz natural pools

Ten minutes east along the coast. Volcanic rock pools.

  • Achadas da Cruz cable car

Ten minutes west. Europe's steepest cable car to a fishing cove.

Common questions

  • Is PR27 the same trail as PR15?

No - same valley, different sections. PR15 descends from Curral Falso. PR27 ascends from the river mouth. They do not overlap.

  • Can I swim in the river?

Small pools at the cascades are technically swimmable but cold (10-12°C) and shallow. Better to take a dip at Porto Moniz pools afterwards.

  • How fit do I need to be?

Average fitness. The 200 m climb is the main challenge - manageable for any regular walker.
