How-To Guide

How to Use SIMplifica

SIMplifica is Madeira's official government portal for booking trail permits and paying hiking fees. This guide walks you through the booking process step by step - or shows you how to skip it entirely by booking with a licensed protocol operator.

Fastest path

Skip SIMplifica - book a protocol operator

ICNF protocol operators are RNAAT-licensed guides registered with the Madeira Regional Forestry Service. They handle the SIMplifica permit for you, and the trail fee is included in their tour price at the discounted operator rate of €3 instead of the public €4.50.

What is SIMplifica?

SIMplifica (simplifica.madeira.gov.pt) is the Madeira Regional Government's online services portal. For hikers, it's where you:

  • Check which trails require permits and their availability
  • Pay trail access fees (typically €3 per person)
  • Book your hiking date (required for some trails)
  • Get confirmation/ticket to present if checked

Step-by-Step Booking Guide

1

Access the Portal

Go to simplifica.madeira.gov.pt in your web browser. The site is available in Portuguese, English, and other languages - look for the language selector.

2

Find Trail Permits

Navigate to the hiking trails section. Look for "Percursos Pedestres" (Hiking Trails) or similar. The exact menu structure may change, but trail permits are typically under tourism or nature services.

3

Select Your Trail

Choose the PR route you want to hike (e.g., PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes, PR1 Pico do Areeiro). The system will show availability and any capacity limits for your chosen date.

4

Choose Date & Number of Hikers

Select your hiking date and specify how many people are in your group. Each person typically needs their own permit.

5

Pay Online

Complete payment with a credit or debit card. The fee is typically around €3 per person but can vary by trail. You'll receive a confirmation email with your permit/ticket.

6

Save Your Confirmation

Download or screenshot your permit confirmation. You may be asked to show it at the trailhead or during your hike. Keep it accessible on your phone.

Tips & Troubleshooting

  • Book in advance - Popular trails like PR6 and PR1 can fill up, especially in peak season
  • Check trail status separately - Buying a permit doesn't guarantee the trail is open. Verify status on our status page
  • Madeira residents are exempt - If you're a resident, you don't pay but may still need to register
  • Portal can be slow - The site sometimes has performance issues. Try during off-peak hours if it's unresponsive
  • Save confirmation offline - Phone signal is unreliable on trails, so save your permit before you go

Who pays the fee, and how much?

The fee structure is simple once you know which category you fall into. Use this decision flow:

Madeira resident or child under 12

Exempt - €0. Still register on SIMplifica to obtain the permit. Bring proof of residency / age at the trailhead if asked.

Non-resident hiking on your own (DIY)

Pay €4.50 per person per trail per day on SIMplifica. EU residents pay the same as non-EU - no discount for nationality.

Booking through a protocol operator

Trail fee is €3 (included in the operator's price). The operator handles SIMplifica for you. See verified partners.

Hiking a free trail (no permit required)

A small number of PR routes are free. See the full fee list before you book to avoid paying for a trail that does not require it.

When SIMplifica is down or unresponsive

The portal has known capacity issues during peak booking windows (early morning Madeira time, weekends, just before bank holidays). If the page hangs, returns a 500 error, or the payment screen times out, you have three fallbacks:

  1. Wait and retry off-peak. Try 22:00-07:00 Madeira time (UTC). Booking windows clear within minutes once load drops.
  2. Book a protocol operator. Licensed operators handle SIMplifica internally and have allocated capacity. See verified partners. If the portal is down for everyone, this is the only realistic same-day option.
  3. Contact ICNF Madeira directly. The Regional Forestry Service (Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza) can issue permits manually. Phone numbers and Funchal office address are listed on the "Contactos" footer of simplifica.madeira.gov.pt.

Common error messages and fixes

"Payment method not accepted"

Some non-EU debit cards fail. Try a credit card (Visa/Mastercard work most reliably). PayPal is not supported. Apple Pay / Google Pay are not supported.

"Session expired"

The portal logs you out after about 10 minutes of inactivity. Restart the flow from the trail listing page. If it persists, switch browsers or clear cookies for simplifica.madeira.gov.pt.

"No availability"

The daily cap for that trail+date is sold out. Try the same trail one or two days later, or pick an alternative trail. PR1 alternatives: see the PR1 alternatives guide.

English language broken / not switching

The English UI sometimes fails to load all strings. The Portuguese flow is the same - PR codes, dates and prices are identical. Use the language toggle one more time, then hard-refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R).
