Best season
Year-round
PR4 is a forgiving all-weather option. Spring and autumn are clearest. Winter can deliver dramatic cloud-sea views below the path - the trail sits at 1,300-1,400 m, often above the inversion line.
“The easiest fee-required trail with the best Funchal vista. Half a day, half the effort.”

How to reach the start
Map placeholder
Start: Poço da Neve · End: Casa do Barreiro (Funchal Ecological Park)
By car from Funchal
About 30 minutes up the ER103 to Poço da Neve. Steep mountain road, often above cloud line by 1,000 m.
Parking
Free parking at the Poço da Neve area car park.
Public transport
No direct bus to Poço da Neve. Bus 56 reaches Poiso, then taxi (€10-15) for the final 4 km.
Operator pickup
Protocol partners run PR4 as a quick half-day, often combined with the Pico do Areeiro sunrise view from the nearby car park.
Taxi or transfer
Funchal to Poço da Neve one-way is €25-30. Pickup at the Ecological Park exit (if doing the full route) is a different fare.
Tip from Filipe
If the lower section is closed, treat PR4 as an out-and-back from Poço da Neve to the panoramic viewpoint at roughly km 3. That covers the postcard view without the logistics tail.
Driving yourself
Madeira rental from Funchal Airport, around €25-40/day in May
We use DiscoverCars to compare local agencies. Trailhead access on most PR routes is easier with a car.

Section by section
Distances, landmarks, and what to expect underfoot.
0.0 - 0.5 km
0:10
Poço da Neve ice house
The trail begins past the restored 1813 ice house - the snow-storage pit that supplied 19th-century Funchal's ice trade. Information panels in PT/EN at the entrance.
0.5 - 2.0 km
0:30
High-altitude levada to the first viewpoint
Flat levada path winds along the mountainside. High-altitude flora - tree heather, broom, hardy grasses. First panoramic break in the trees opens to the south.
2.0 - 3.0 km
0:25
Panoramic viewpoint
The main view break - Funchal harbour visible 1,300 m below, the airport runway to the east, the Desertas Islands on a clear horizon. Photo stop.
3.0 - 5.2 km
1:00
Descent to Casa do Barreiro (when open)
Trail drops gently through pine forest into the Funchal Ecological Park. Casa do Barreiro at the end is a small restored shelter; park ranger station and a marked exit road.
04 · Gear and safety
What to bring and when to bail
Required
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Warm layer - 10°C cooler than Funchal
- Water: 1 L
- Light rain jacket
- SIMplifica permit
Recommended
- Camera - the panorama earns it
- Sunglasses (alpine glare at this altitude)
- Snacks
- Cash for the cafe at the Ecological Park exit (if open)
Cloud line is unpredictable
PR4 sits exactly at the inversion zone. A clear morning at Funchal can mean full cloud at Poço da Neve. Bring a layer regardless of the city forecast.
Partial-opening notes
Until the lower section reopens, do not bushwhack down to the Ecological Park - the restoration zone has trip hazards and rangers will turn you back.
Gentle but persistent
The descent feels easy. The return uphill (if doing it as out-and-back from the park back to Poço) is harder than expected - 100 m gain stretched over 2 km.
Signal good at the top, weaker low
Strong cell at the trailhead and the viewpoint. Drops as you descend into the Ecological Park valley.
Emergency: 112
Coverage along this route is patchy. Walk-out points: Poço da Neve car park (km 0). Casa do Barreiro at km 5.2 (when open) is the alternate exit.

Path B · Protocol operator
Skip the portal
€3.00
per person, fee included in tour
PR4 is a low-stakes operator product - the fee saving alone (€1.50) does not move the needle, but the bundled transport up the mountain road removes the only friction. Best paired with Areeiro or Pico Ruivo by operators.

06 · After the hike
What to do with the rest of the day
Pair it with
Pico do Areeiro viewing platform
Three minutes drive from Poço da Neve. Paved tourist viewpoint at 1,818 m. Sunrise or sunset stop on the same trip.
PR1.2 Pico Ruivo from Achada
Same mountain massif, different summit. Pair PR4 with PR1.2 for a full mountain day at modest difficulty.
Funchal Ecological Park
If the full PR4 reopens, the Ecological Park at the foot of the trail has nature trails of its own. Local school groups, very low foot traffic for visitors.
Common questions
Is PR4 OK for kids?
Yes, from age 6+. The path is wide and gentle. The ice house is a kid-friendly story stop. Under 12s pay no fee.
Best time of day?
Late morning (10:00-12:00) for the panoramic view in good light. Sunrise from Pico do Areeiro plus PR4 makes a strong combined morning.
Can I shorten it?
Yes - the viewpoint at km 3 is the natural turnaround if doing it out-and-back. Saves the descent into the park.
